Bryce Fastener recently announced a case study reporting significant reduction in copper wire theft for the city of Tucson was recently published in the January-February edition of the International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Journal. The City claims zero theft of copper wire has occurred in areas they have recently protected with Bryce Fastener’s tamper resistant bolts installed in pull box lids made by MR Steel.

“Wherever we’ve installed the new fasteners, we have experienced zero copper thefts…copper thefts from our Tucson municipal street lighting is in decline.”

The City of Tucson began experiencing theft of copper wire from light pole and street pull box covers in 2006. Remote arterial roadways lit by hundreds of municipal streetlights proved to be easy targets for copper thieves to steal from multiple times. Replacement costs totaled $500,000 over five years, therefore creating a strong need for a security solution.
Richard Rizzoli, who serves as the Electrician Supervisor for the city, was directly involved in coming up with a solution to stop the copper thefts. He tested potential solutions; all involved either a second cover or a locking device but all could be defeated in less than five minutes. Richard came across a steel pull box lid made by M.R. Steel secured with Bryce Fasteners and this combination could not be beat. The lids were then tested in high risk areas and proved to be successful. On one occasion, Richard “found tool marks on the Bryce Fasteners where a would-be-thief had attempted to break into the steel covered pull box but had failed.” The city has now retrofitted all high risk pull box covers with M.R Steel’s lid and specifies Bryce Fasteners in their new capital improvement projects. “Wherever we’ve installed the new fasteners, we have experienced zero copper thefts…copper thefts from our Tucson municipal street lighting is in decline,” says Richard. The full article can be read in the 2014 January-February edition of IMSA Journal.
