Two thoughts are almost bound to be uppermost in the mind of any visitor to Tata Steel’s wire rod mill. One is sheer scale – from reheat furnace to end of the cooling line stretches some 250 metres. The second, requiring a little more calculation, is the realisation that as the rod is drawn the rate at which it travels accelerates dramatically – to something akin to the pace Usain Bolt achieved at the London Olympics.
