Ejot UK was approached by Valeo Vision to develop thermoplastics fastenings for its miniature automotive-camera assembly, specifically those used in vehicle reversing systems and visual security aids.
Based in Tuam, Ireland, Valeo Vision was fully aware of Ejot’s Delta PT screw for thermoplastics and the Altracs screw for light alloy assemblies.
These particular products from the Ejot stable are used extensively in the production of automotive lighting and in-car components, in Valeo’s case predominantly to secure PCB and outer casings.
Manufacturers currently in line for the final products include VW, BMW, Jaguar and Landrover.
The miniature design of Valeo Vision’s new-generation imaging systems demanded a small screw application to replace conventional nut, bolt and insert technology.
Valeo were persuaded to choose Ejot’s Delta PT and Altracs by the overall cost reduction and high level of vibration resistance that the direct-fix fastening systems offered.
The challenge was to design and control such intricate assembly with virtually zero tolerance for inconsistency in a mass-production arena.
The design process saw a committed and considerable collaboration between Ejot’s research and development arm Applitec and its counterparts at Valeo Vision.
More than 40 test runs were conducted by the Ejot team as they worked to achieve the ultimate repeatable installation process for the final design.
Their continued support became pivotal as variations of the design were then introduced.
According to Ejot, willingness to share knowledge and original thinking is key in engineering development.
In this instance a tolerance build up when making castings meant a very small installation corridor as potential extremes in bore size can represent the difference between a successful or a failed joint.
The solution was to reduce the manufacturing tolerance in the screw manufacture process itself.
Every detail down to variations of the screws’ protective …
