It happened again when I was at the Metropolitan Fastener Distributor Association show. An industry friend asked me:Friend: “You’re on that Twitter, aren’t you?”.
T.S. “Yes”.
Friend: “Yeah, I just don’t get it. I don’t care about some celebrity going to the corner for a cup of coffee”.
T.S. “Ugh”.I want to tell my peer, “don’t act old”. Seriously, quit acting old. Don’t be the person (or parent) we all knew who said, “I don’t want a cell phone. I don’t want anybody to be able to get hold of me whenever they want.” Today, that statement would equate to: “Yeah, I don’t want a smart phone. I don’t want to hear about any quote opportunities or problems until I get back to my office at the end of the day or tomorrow morning when the issue has been festering for 12-24 hours. And I sure don’t want to know that my meeting has been postponed or canceled until I walk up the door and find out in person. Yep, then I’d have to change gears and go back to the office or make some other visit. Nope, no smart phone for this guy”.
Twitter is not a smart phone, and I’m not suggesting it is anywhere near as important. But, it is used by a lot of young people today and they work in our businesses or will do so very soon. And somebody uses Twitter or they would not be going public very soon. So, it makes sense for us all to look into it at least a little to see what it is about. (…)
