Surface Issues – Part I: Outline Of Surface Issues In Fastener Processing
Dr. Roger N. WrightAccording to my records, this is the thirty-sixth edition of this column, spanning almost six years. An initial series of ten columns was devoted to “The Strength of Steel”, followed by ten columns on “Mechanical Properties”, nine columns on “Working the Metal” and six columns on “Annealing of Steel”. I am starting a new series at this point, titled “Surface Issues”. The emphasis will be on such areas as friction, lubrication, surface quality and near-surface metallurgical character. Most of the focus will continue to be on steel. This column will focus on deformation processing and will not, generally, extend to surface engineering technologies such as plating, polishing, pickling, grinding and machining, although we may wander into such areas to illustrate basic points…..
