Like so many times before, I found my inspiration for the following post right from the December 17 edition of “The Kiplinger Letter”. For me, they just have a way of summarizing a topic that is thorough but leaves a lot to think about.
The first line reads, “Make way for Generation Y…the children of the Baby Boomers”. According to the newsletter, there are 77 million Gen Yers, which is roughly the same number as the Baby Boomers. But, Gen Y is a smaller percentage of the U.S. population than the Boomers were since so many Boomers are still around, alive and kicking. The article states that the single most important difference between Gen Y and the older generations is their familiarity with technology. 90% of Gen Yers over 18 use the internet, compared with three-quarters of the population as a whole.
More than 60% of them go wireless using laptops, tablets and hand held devices. More interesting is that they intensely rely on cell phones – day and night – with 83% keeping their phones nearby. Two-fifths don’t even have land lines. A quarter of them send more that 50 text messages a day.
They are nearly as likely to get their news from the Internet as from TV (59% vs 65%). Even fewer Gen Yers read newspapers or listen to the radio for news (24% and 18% respectively). According to surveys from the Pew Research Center, two of the most frequently cited news sources are Yahoo and Google.
